A woman robed in white



Once,
while walking long and hard,
on a hot and dusty road,
I met a woman robed in white.
She offered me a drink
from a heavy, ancient cup. 
I thought it tasted bitter.
She smiled and said “Yes, it can,
Unless you drink it all”.

I looked into her eyes.
There shone
The sun, the moon,
and all the shining stars,
in infinite array, floating on a lake
of silent love.

I said, “First, tell me,
who has done this,
and what is their report?”

In unison a chorus replied:
“We have, each of us, one by one,
and yes, it was very bitter,
until we drank it all.”.
And I could see it was true:
Their eyes were radiant,
glowing beacons
of truth.

I lifted the ancient goblet to my lips
and tried again and nearly gagged,
The foul drink burned my throat.
Wounded, I said “Must I?”
and she said
“No,
you are completely free,
and will always be”.

I looked deep into the black liquid of my despair,
scheming madly for an escape.
Surely this can’t be:
that to be free,
I must face death, and pain,
and all uncertainty
with clear eyed honesty?

She said: “When you are ready,
I am here.
I have always been here,
And will always be here.
Is this not
what you really want?”

Again I looked into her eyes,
And again I saw that soul, that
Dewdrop dissolving into the ocean of infinity.
And I saw that the soul that I saw was my own.
And I saw the sweet nectar at the bottom of the cup.
And in that sacred heartbeat all my falsehood dropped away:
Suddenly,  in a mad fit of courage,
My heart shouted “yes, yes, I want
Nothing but yes”.
 

And so I drank it all.

I thought I would die.

And blessedly,
I did.
